2.2 Group 2 Metals Flashcards
What are the ions that the group 2 metals form
2+
How does atomic radius change as you go down group 2
Atomic radius increases as you go down group 2, due to additional electron shells
How does reactivity change as you go down group 2
Reactivity increases as you go down group 2, as there is more shileding, less nuclear attraction and therefore the outer electron is easier to lose.
How does first ionisation energy change as you go down group 2
First ionisation energy decreases as you go down group 2, greater atomic radius and increased shielding decreases nuclear attratcion to ourer electron therefore easier to lose
How does melting point change as you go down group 2
Melting point decreases as you go down group 2, because the electrostatic attraction gets weaker as the ion becomes larger
What are the products when you react group 2 with water
Group 2 + Water = metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What will the metal hydroxide product form as
as alkaline solution
How does solubility of their hydroxides change as you go down group 2
Solubility increases down the group
What is the most soluble and least soluble group 2 hydroxde
Magesium Hydroxde = least soluble
Barium Hydroxide = most soluble
