2.2 electronic structures and the periodic table Flashcards
What determines an elements position on the periodic table?
The atomic (proton) number of an element determines its position on the periodic table
What determines an atoms chemical properties?
The number of electrons in the outermost shell (highest energy level) of an atom determines its chemical properties
What does the group number of an element represent?
The group number and the periodic table equals the number of electrons in the outer shell of an element
Do the atoms of metals and non-metals lose or gain electrons?
The atoms of metals tend to lose electrons, whereas those of nonmetals tend to gain electrons
Where are the noble gases located in the periodic table?
The noble gases are in group 0
Why a noble gases unreactive?
They have very stable electron arrangements
