2.2 descriptive or qualitative methods Flashcards
what is a descriptive method?
research methods designed for making careful, systematic observations
case study
in-depth analysis of the behavior of one individual or a small group of people
advantages:
_____ source
less ____ concerns
useful
ethical
limitations:
- limited generalizability
how do we evaluated case studies? BIOT
- background records
- interviews with relevant personnel
- observation
- tests: personality, cognitive, brain imaging
define naturalistic observation
in-depth study of a phenomenon in its natural setting
(Note: can be overt or covert. If overt, there may be biases eg social desirability or Hawthorne. If overt, think of ethical implications)
advantages and limitations of naturalistic observation
+ helpful for developing hypotheses
- other methods to test bc no IV manipulated
Survey
participants are asked the same series of questions
ad / lim of survey
+ test large group
+ info quickly received, little expense
- generalizability
- bias: self-reporting (Note: depends on what type of question it is)
what makes a good survey?
sample: specific group u want to collect data from, e.g. all freshmen from X school
population: entire group of where the sample is taken, e.g. all students at X school
