Mujahideen
Foreign fighters initially saw the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan as holy war or struggle. (“Jihad”)
Taliban
The corrupt de facto (“of fact”) government of Afghanistan at the time of the 9/11 attacks.
Al Qaeda
“The Foundation” -A network of terrorists that planned and executed attacks internationally. They were responsible for 9/11.
Osama Bin Laden
Leader/funder of Al Qaeda and the 9/11 attacks.
ISIS-K
ISIS Khorasan
A self-proclaimed break-off of the Islamic State. They recently claimed responsibility for the bombing of Kabul.
Saddam Hussein
Tyrannical dictator of Iraq from 1978-2003. The US removed him from power in 2003.
Iraqi Republican Guard
The regular Iraqi Army that was loyal to Saddam Hussein.
Islamists/Jihadists
People who believe in a religious Holy War that condones terrible terroristic acts.
ISIS / ISIL
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria/The Islamic State in the Levant.
Deregulation
The act of removing or diminishing rules or laws that were in place
Mortgage
The device that allows many people to purchase homes. This is done by borrowing large amounts of money now and paying back the lender over long periods of time.
Credit Construction
A response that stops many people from borrowing money for various reasons. This was a response to the 2008 Recession.
Government Bailouts
The Government’s decision to assist many large businesses and banks after the 2008 Recession. This angered many citizens.
Rodney King
He was a motorist who was beaten by the police following an arrest in 1991.
Trayvon Martin
A teenager who was shot and killed in Florida. The community watch volunteer who shot him used the argument that he had to “stand his ground” during an argument that the two engage in. The gunman was found not guilty.
Michael Brown
He was shot by the police in Ferguson, MO. This is where some eyewitnesses said he was standing with his hands up saying “Don’t shoot”.
Freddie Gray
He ran from the police and was arrested. During transport, he was severely injured and died. The Police were blamed.
MeToo
A movement that started on social media but quickly spread. This provided victims of sexual harassment and assault a vehicle for speaking about what had happened to them.
Obergefell v. Hodges
This was the Supreme Court case that provided for same-sex marriage equality.
