Writer, Educator and Scholar

Best known as the author of “Ibalong - the Bikol Folk Epic Fragment” (UST Publishing House, 1996)

His writings, published in books, national magazines, and scholarly journals, include works on philosophy, literature, religion, culture and English. In 1983, he edited a collection of writings by Bikol authors, the “Bikol Voices Anthology”

In 1970, he received the Outstanding in Bikol Culture Award from the Legazpi City government and in 1988, the Bikolista Award from Ateneo de Naga. In 1963, he received the Outstanding in Scholarship from the University of Nueva Caceres Alumni Association.

In 1998, he received the Rokyaw Ibalnong Bikol Achievement Award for Literature, and in 2007, he was posthumously awarded the “Orgullo Kan Bikol” for Research and Literature, and the First “Omaw sa Oragon Award” by Aquinas University in 2003.

is regarded as the “Father of Cebuano Language and Letters.” He was born in Cebu City on April 18, 1877 to Marcelino Sotto and Pascuala Yap. He finished his secondary education at the University of San Carlos. He became a senator, representative, and Philippine envoy to the UN General Assembly, and was elected Cebu mayor in 1907.

He published La Justicia, El Pueblo, El Nacional, The Philippine Republic, The Independent, and Ang Suga. He penned the first realistic play, Yuta sa Gugmang Natawhan, and the first Cebuano operetta, Maktan. He also wrote short stories published in Bag-ong Kusog.
