Eq for d-electron count?
=group number - oxidation state
are ligands lewis acids or bases?
lewis bases (electron pair donors)
are metal atoms lewis acids or bases?
lewis acids (electron pair acceptors)
what are some bidentate ligands?
acetoacetonate (acac), ethandioate/oxalate (C2O4^2-), ethylenediamine (en)
how many e- do bidentate ligands donate in total?
4e-
what are the isomers for sq planar always?
cis and trans
what are the isomers for a metal with 2 ligand types with 3 of each?
fac and mer
what are the isomers for a metal with 2 of one ligand and 4 of another ligand?
cis and trans
what is the difference between enantiomers and isomers?
enantiomers = optical with the different shaped bonds
isomers = position of atoms
eq for metal oxidation state?
= overall charge on the complex - total formal charge on the ligands
what gives a complex higher pKa?
1) more neutral ligands (e.g. CO) to stabilise the negative charge when a proton leaves - the most stable conjugate base gives a stronger acid
2) a more protic/electronegative metal so the proton is removed more readily
3) if the COMPLEX is negatively charged - it will be unfavourable for it to become more negatively charged by removal of a proton, so the eqm will lie towards this species (acidic)
what are reduction and oxidation in terms of e-?
reduction = addition of e-
oxidation = removal of e-
what mechanism is given by negative entropy (S)?
associative
