2.1.4: Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What are enzymes?
A
- Biological catalysts
- Globular proteins that interact with substrate molecules causing them to react at a much faster rate
2
Q
The chemical reactions required for growth are ——– reactions and ——————————-
A
The chemical reactions required for growth are anabolic (building up) reactions and are all catalysed by enzymes
3
Q
——– reactions release energy and are ———————
A
Catabolic reactions (breaking down) release energy and are ctalysed by enzymes
4
Q
What is metabolism
A
The sum of all of the different reactions and reaction pathways happening in a cell or an organism, and it can only happen as a result of the control and order imposed by enzymes.
5
Q
What is the V max
A
Enzymes can only increase the rates of reaction up to the V max.
This is the maximum initial velocity or rate of the enzyme-catalysed reaction.
