Strengths
A
- HM: the case study of HM also supports the multi store model as he was unable to encode knew long term memories after surgery during which his hippocampus was removed but his short term memory was unaffected. He has remembered little of personal or public events occurring in the past 45 years, however short term memory remains intact. Therefore supports the view that the long term memory and short term memory are two separate and linear stores
- Baddeley: Many memory studies provide evidence to support the distinction between short term memory and long term memory; in terms of encoding, duration and capacity. Eg Baddeley found that encoding in the short term memory was acoustic and encoding in the long term memory was semantic. Therefore this supports that these are two independent stores that encode information differently, as the multi store model suggests

Weaknesses
A
- The model is oversimplified when it suggests that both short term and long term memory operate in a single, uniform fashion. Research has led to the development of the working memory model which found STM was made-up of different components eg visuospatial sketchpad. Therefore short term memory is not one single unitary store that the multi store model suggested but short term memory is actually far more complex
- Rehearsal is too simplistic of an explanation for the transfer of information from short term memory to long term memory eg explained by how we can recall info which hasn’t been rehearsed yet, but are unable to recall info we have. Therefore the role of rehearsal as a means of transferring info from short term memory to long term memory is less important than the model claimed and it can’t be the only method of transfer
