2.1.2 Jesus Flashcards
What are 6 pieces of evidence that Jesus was God?
- John 14:10 “…I am in the father and the father is in me …”
- John 1:14 “The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.”
- His conception was miraculous.
- Many accounts in the New Testament of Jesus performing miracles, e.g. he healed a blind man.
- At his baptism, God declares his relationship to Jesus and declares he is special; “This is my own dear son, with whom I am pleased” (Matthew 3:17)
- After his crucifixion Jesus is resurrected and meets with his disciples a number of times.
Why do Jehovah’s Witnesses believe Jesus wasn’t God (7)?
- Believe Jesus was God’s/Jehovah’s first creation, not God himself.
- As Jesus was created by God, he isn’t equal in power to God.
- Jesus never thought of himself as God/equal to God.
- Jesus is the son of God, not God himself.
- Jesus came to earth from heaven.
- When Jesus was on earth he was a perfect human being, but not divine in any way.
- Jesus gave his human life as sacrifice to make human salvation possible.
Why do unitarians believe Jesus wasn’t God (8)?
- Jesus was a man, not god.
- Jesus was not physically resurrected.
- Jesus was a Jewish prophet with a mission of reconciliation.
- Jesus was filled with divine inspiration.
- Jesus is a supreme example of living with integrity and compassion.
- Jesus’ life is reflective of the divine potential in all of us.
- Jesus didn’t think of himself as God.
- Jesus didn’t survive in a physical sense.
What happened at the crucifixion of Jesus (11)?
- Jesus carried the beam of his cross through the streets to Calvary.
- When he arrived at Calvary, he was nailed to the cross. Hands nailed to the cross piece, feet nailed to base. Body was arranged in a way that prisoner couldn’t ease pain/quicken process.
- A crown of thorns placed on his head and a sign placed above him saying ‘Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews’ - mocking.
- Hung between 2 thieves - promised 1 would join him in paradise.
- Given vinegar on a sponge.
- Roman soldiers gambled for his clothes.
- Jesus asked God to forgive those who sentenced him.
- Jesus’ mother and other disciples gathered at foot of cross.
- Jesus died saying ‘It is finished’. At his death, darkness over land and temple curtain torn in two.
- A Roman soldier pierced his side with spear to confirm he was dead - blood and water flowed out.
- Jesus’ body was taken down and buried in a tomb.
What is the importance of the crucifixion (6)?
- It repairs the relationship between God and humans. (Removes sin.)
- Shows that God is omnibenevolent and understands suffering - takes punishment for human sin out of love.
- Fulfils Isaiah’s prophet and God’s promise to restore his relationship with his creation. Isaiah = prophet 700 years before Jesus, prophesied that God would send a Messiah (chosen one) to pay the price of human sin through suffering.
- Begins the process of salvation (saving the soul from sin). Salvation begins with a person putting faith in Jesus and is the chance to live with God for eternity after death.
- It was part of God’s divine plan.
- Allows resurrection to happen, which reinforces; that Jesus is God incarnate, that God is omnipotent, and that there is life after death for those who have faith in Jesus.
What does ‘1 Corinthians 15:12-14’ state?
“Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain.”
Why is the resurrection of Jesus important (9)?
- Greatest miracle in New Testament.
- Proves God is omnipotent and omnibenevolent.
- Resurrection of Jesus is a fundamental belief of christians.
- Evidence that Jesus is God incarnate.
- Evidence that there is life after death, and those who trust in Jesus and live according to God’s will have eternal life with God.
- Informs christians about how they might exist after death.
- Assures christians that God will forgive sins if they follow the teachings of Jesus.
- Fulfils the prophecy made by Jesus before his death.
- Jesus defeated death. Shows power of good over evil.
What are the key points of ‘Luke 24:1-9’ (4)?
- Jesus’ female followers went to the tomb to prepare his body for burial.
- On arrival they discovered the entrance to the tomb was no longer sealed and Jesus’ body was gone.
- 2 men appear and ask “Why do you look for the living among the dead?”.
- The women leave the tomb and return to 11 disciples to tell them Jesus was risen from the dead, in this account women don’t see resurrected Jesus.
What do Christians believe about the Ascension of Jesus (3)?
- 40 days after resurrection, Jesus rose back to heaven.
- Some believe Jesus physically rose up to heaven.
- Others understand the ascension symbolically - shows Jesus continues to be a spiritual presence in the world.
Why is the Ascension of Jesus important (2)?
- Reminds Christian that Jesus has gone to heaven to prepare a place for them, so they don’t need to fear death.
- Through ascension the limitations of human flesh were removed and Jesus was no longer restricted by time and space, allowing him to be present with his followers wherever they are.
