2.1.1 cell structure Flashcards
what is the structure and role of the nucleus/ nucleolus
- contains nuclear envelope with 2 membranes with fluid between.
- has nuclear pores which allows large molecules to pass
- nucleolus: makes rRNA which makes ribosomes
structure and role of mitochondria
structure: double membrane separated by fluid filled space (matrix) and is highly folded to form cristae
role: site of respiration in the cell and releases energy to cell for metabolic reactions
role of lysosomes
- responsible for breaking down old organelles
structure of golgi apparatus
role of golgi apparatus
- modifies proteins and packages them into vesicles
structure of endoplasmic reticulum
role of rough endoplasmic reticulum
- responsible for synthesis and transport of proteins
role of smooth endoplasmic reticulum
- responsible for synthesis and storage for lipids/ carbohydrates
structure of centriole
role of centrioles
- aid in organising cell division
role of cytoskeleton
microfilament: allows cell contraction during cytokinesis & aids cell movement
intermediate filament: provides mechanical strength
microtubules: acts as tracks for movement of organelles and vesicles
