2.1.1 Atomic structure and Isotopes Flashcards
Define atomic number (Z)
The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
Define mass number (A)
The total number of protons and neutrons in the atom.
Define isotopes
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons, but a different number of neutrons.
Why do isotopes have similar chemical properties?
Because they have the same electronic structure.
Define relative isotopic mass
Relative isotopic mass is the mass of one isotope compared to 1/12 of the mass of one atom of carbon-12.
Define relative atomic mass
Relative atomic mass is the weighted mean mass of one atom compared to 1/12 of the mass of one atom of carbon-12.
Define relative molecular mass
Relative molecular mass is the average mass of a molecule compared to 1/12 of the mass of one atom of carbon-12.
