what is the meaning of standard/ standardisation?
establishing an agreed level of quality or attainment in product design. This can refer to manufacturing practises, safety measures or environmental considerations
what does ISO stand for?
international standards organisation
what is the international standards organisation?
a body that formulates worldwide industrial and commercial standards. Manufacturers that are aware with ISO standards can inform design decisions to ensure that products are marketable and usable worldwide
what does BSI stand for?
British standards institute
what does the British standards institution do?
the BSI is a representative that works with CEN- European standards body- they set out essential requirements for products so that the product fits its intended purpose. They have a code of practise which has recommendations for materials, designs, components and manufacturing processes. They also have the responsibility of testing products to ensure they fit within British and European standards- if they fit the standards of both of these organisations they can be awarded a ‘kite mark’ to show that the product fits within intended standards
what is the CE mark?
(conformative European) is a symbol given by the manufacturer to say that the product conforms to European protection laws/legislative requirements to be sold in a particular country, in this case Europe. The symbol is not a measure of safety or quality but a symbol that shows the product fits within laws
what four things does garment labelling need to include?
- Fibre content- what fibres the product is made from
- country of origin- where the product has been manufactured
- care instructions- how to care for the product e.g in terms of washing, ironing, steaming, drying etc
- flammability
what is the European eco label?
a voluntary label established in 1992 and awarded to companies who conform to strict environmental criteria
when was the European eco label introduced?
1992
what are packaging directives?
EU regulations that aim to minimise packaging waste and its environmental impact.
what do packaging directs set standards for?
The design, composition and reuse or recycling packaging, ensuring a more circular economy and promoting sustainable practises.
