  • planning- theresearcher decides strategy: what to research and how to research, formulate hypotheses or question
  • information gathering- identifying a sample to study, conducting an initial pilot study and applying research methods to collect data
  • information processing- acquired data must be analysed and interpreted
  • evaluation- an internal analyis that asks whether the research method was appropriate, and other questions and an external analysis by which conclusions are reported to a wider public audience for their analysis and criticism
