2.1 The Rock Cycle Flashcards
What are the stages of the rock cycle?
Weathering Transport and erosion Deposition Burial Uplift/recrystallisation/melting
Explain weathering?
The insitu break up or down of rocks due to physical
, chemical or biological processes
Explain transport and erosion?
Grains are transported and are broken up due to abrasion and attrition becoming smaller and rounder
There 4 modes of transport - ice, water, gravity, wind
Explain deposition?
Occurs when there is not enough energy to maintain transport
Explain burial?
Layers of sediment build up causing compaction and cementation turning sediment into sedimentary rock
Explain uplift?
Sedimentary rock can be pushed up to the surface again
Explain recrystallisation?
Sedimentary rock recrystallises into metamorphic rock due to increase temperature and/or pressure
Explain melting?
Sedimentary rock can melt into magma (intrusive or extrusive igneous rocks)
Intrusive - sills, dykes and plutons
Extrusive - columnar jointing and lava flow
Metamorphic rock can melt the same way
Partial melting can also be of mantle peridotite
