2.1 Relations and Functions Flashcards
Relation
Is a set of pairs of input and output values.
Domain
Of a relation is the set of all inputs or x-coordinates of the ordered pairs.
Range
Of a relation is the set of all outputs or y-coordinates of the ordered pairs.
Mapping Diagram
Which links elements of the domain with corresponding elements of the range.
Function
Is a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element in the range.
Vertical-line Test
On the graph of a relation to tell whether the relation is a function. If a vertical line passes through at least two points on the graph, then one element of the domain is paired with more than one element of the range.
Function Notation
f (x) f of x or a function f or x
