2.1 Properties Of Matter Flashcards
Is a measure of the amount of matter the object contains
Mass
Is anything that has mass and takes up space
Matter
Is the measure of space occupied by the object
Volume
What are mass and volume examples of
Extensive properties
Property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample
Extensive properties
Is the property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter
Intensive properties
matter that has a uniform and definite composition
Substance
Is the quality or condition of the substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substances composition
Physical property
What is a solid
Is a form of matter that has a definite shape and volume. The shape doesn’t depend on the shape of the container. The particles are often tightly packed together in an orderly arrangement they were difficult to squeeze into smaller volume they expand only when they are heated. I.e. definite shape and volume not easily compressed
What is a liquid
Is a form of matter that has an indefinite shape, flows, yet has a fixed volume
What are gases
Is a form of matter that takes both the shape and volume of its container
Used for substances, like oxygen that exists in the gaseous state at room temperature
Gas
Describes the gaseous state of a substance that is generally all liquid or solid at room temperature
Vapor
Some properties a material change, but the composition of the material does not change
Physical change
What are reversible changes
Boiling freezing melting condensing
