2.1 Kinematics Flashcards
What is displacement?
The change in the position vector.
What is distance?
The length of the path travelled, a scalar quantity.
What is average velocity?
The ratio of the displacement to the time taken has the same direction as the position vector.
What is average speed?
The ratio of the total distance travelled to the total time taken, this is a scalar.
What is instantaneous velocity?
The rate of change with time of the displacement - a vector that is tangent to the path.
What is instantaneous speed?
The rate of change with time of the distance travelled, equal to the magnitude of the instantaneous velocity vector.
What is the average acceleration?
The ratio of the change of the velocity vector to the time taken, vector is in the same direction as velocity.
What is the instantaneous acceleration?
The rate of change with time of the velocity vector.
What does the slope of a displacement time graphs give?
Velocity.
What does the slope of a velocity time graph give?
Acceleration.
What does the area under a velocity time graph give?
Displacement.
What does the area under a acceleration time graph give?
Change in velocity.
