what is social control?
persuading or compelling people to conform to society’s norms, laws and expectations
what does the term internal social control mean?
Controls over our behaviour that come from within ourselves – from our personalities and our values. Also known as self-control.
what does the term external social control mean?
Control over people exacted by society and societal agents of social control (parents/teachers)
what theory is linked to internal forms of social control?
Freud’s psychoanalytic theory
-the superego (part of our personality) tells us what is right and wrong making us conform to societal norms
-it develops through socialisation
-its purpose is to retain the urges of the id, inflicting guilt when we go against our superego
how does tradition and culture link to social control?
-the culture we belong to becomes a part of us through socialisation
-it becomes our norms and determines what we find right and wrong
-conforming to these norms is important as it allows the development of an identity and the acceptance as a member of a community
what is socialisation?
-the process of internalising rules
-this can be from parents/schools/peers
-societal codes become our codes too and therefore we conform willingly
what is rational ideology?
this is used to describe the term where we internalise social rules
-these tells use what is right and wrong and keeps us within the law
which type of socialisation can external social control be linked to?
secondary socialisation
what are agencies of social control?
organisations/insitutions that impose rules in an effort to make us behave a certain way.

punishments
what are positive sanctions?
