Competency refers to the person’s ability to do something
successfully, efficiently, and with confidence
The longitudinal aspect to competency relates to
the ongoing maintenance of professional skills and knowledge needed to continue practice
The APS ethical standards that relate to competency are a part of General Principle
General Principle B: Propriety
the specific competencies outlined in the Ethical Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Women and Girls (APS, 2012) include:
Psychologists examine their own values when providing psychological services to female clients, including assessments and research activities. They are also aware of any limitations they may have when working with such clients, seeking supervision or making an appropriate referral where necessary.
Psychologists maintain their knowledge base about the impact of gender issues in their field of practice. Where relevant, psychologists strive to be aware of women’s services and support groups, and make such information available to their clients (p. 192).
The specific competencies outlined in the Ethical Guidelines for Psychological Services Involving Multiple Clients (APS, 2006) are:
Psychologists assess their own competency to practice with multiple clients and seek appropriate supervision and training in areas where limitations are identified. More specifically, psychologists ensure that they have the skills to effectively manage the relationships with all clients associated with the psychological service they are delivering.
Psychologists are aware of the potential for multiple clients to have competing expectations with respect to the nature, extent, duration, and outcome of the psychological service that is delivered. Psychologists use their professional judgement to determine whether or not the psychological service that has been requested or commissioned by a client is appropriate in the circumstances and within their area of competence (p. 87).
