2.1 (Chemistry) Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and volume.
Mass
Amount of matter in an object (measured in kg, g, mg). Weight does not equal mass.
Volume
Amount of space taken up by an object (measured in L and ml)
Chemistry
The study of change in matter:
Chemical Change: When substances change or combine to create new substances.
Physical Change: When substances change but no new substance is formed.
Chemical Change Evidence
- color
- texture
- of new matter is created
- if heat or light is created
Physical Change Evidence
- color Change (paint)
- melt something
- if matter stays the same but the state changes
- if the shape changes
State/Phase
Solid - definite shape, certain amount of space and volume.
Liquid - definite volume, indefinite shape.
Gas - has a shape and volume determined by it’s surroundings
KTM
Solid - tightly packed particles
Liquid - sliding past each other
Gas - moves freely and quickly

All changes of state are physical changes
Qualitative
Description of a quality
Quantitive
Description of a quantity
Pure Substance
A substance only composed of one time of matter.
Compound
A substance composed of 2 or more elements whose particles combined.
Mixture
Made up of two or more particles.
Heterogenous Mixture
The types of Particles are seen.
