2.1: Cell Metabolism 1 Flashcards
How much energy is released by breaking a phosphoanhydride bond
-31 kJ/mole
Polysaccharides are broken down to
Simple sugars
Proteins are broken down into
Amino acids
Fats are broken down into
Glycerol
What do catabolic pathways do
Break down food molecules to form ATP
What do anabolic pathways do
Form molecules that form the cell which uses ATP
3 main stages of cell metabolism
1) Glycolysis
2) TCA cycle
3) Oxidative Phosphorylation
In glycolysis
Oxidation of glucose within cytosol of cells generates ATP and NADH
In the TCA cycle
Further oxidation of small molecules within mitochondria generates ATP, NADH, FADH2 and waste products
In oxidative phosphorylation
ATP is generated within mitochondria by the reduction of oxygen to water
How many ATP molecules are made from one glucose molecule
38
What kind of reaction is an oxidation-reduction
Electrol transfer
In a ligation reaction (requires ATP)
Covalent bonds are formed
In an isomerization reaction
Atoms are rearranged to form isomers
In a group transfer reaction
Functional groups are transferred from one molecule to another
