Flexible Work Patterns
- Peripheral Workers
- part-time workers/working from home
Positives:
- more productivity
- labor costs would be less because full-time wages don’t have to be paid
- leads to more teamwork + versatility
- there are always employees to give work to, never in shortage
- employees will choose the company with more flexibility
- cuts down on the cost of production (wage rates)
- gives access to internal growth
- temporary workers can eventually become permanent workers
Negative:
- employees might fight for long term benefits
- trade-union might have to get involved.
- collaboration might be difficult
- motivation might not all be equal
- might be difficult to handle the surplus of employees
- slightly demoralizing because of low wages
- no job security
The Shamrock Organization
The shamrock organization is a flexible workforce theory by CHARLES HANDY that helps cut labor costs. There are three parts: 1. A set of core workers -- get benefits -- permanent 2. Peripheral Workers -- temporary -- no benefits -- slightly disposable 3. Outsourced workers -- contract workers - they handle extra work that supports the business
Positives:
- it’s quicker to hire outsourced workers, they may be experts and they handle all managerial stuff so that you don’t have to
- it’s good to have peripheral workers
- those in the core team are company loyal.
Negatives:
- You cannot control the workers that are outsourced, they are their own company
Offshoring
This is an extension of outsourcing by using a firm that is overseas as a subcontractor.
positives:
- tap into a new market
- labor laws may not be as stringent
- brand awareness
- Economies of Scale!
negatives:
- stringent rules, there’s govt policy that could completely change overnight
Internal sources of Recruitment
Positives :
- saves time hiring
- less cost for hiring drives
- strengthen employee engagement
- shorten onboarding times
Negatives:
- leaves a gap in the existing workforce
- results in inflexible culture
- no new ideas/innovation
- discourages new ppl to try and be recruited
External Sources of Recruitment
Positives
- Avoids the risk of creating internal conflicts in the workplace
- new ppl with new ideas and innovation
- insights workers to grow such that they won’t be replaced.
- -promotes change as a corporate culture
Negatives
- greater risk
- more expensive - recruitment is expensive ( advertising costs)
- time-consuming
- external recruits have to be introduced to the culture/ adjust to the new workplace.
Maslows theory of motivation
Maslow’s theory is a theory that focuses on the hierarchy of needs which are all on different levels.
- Physiological needs:: necessary for survival
- Security needs:: (job security, sick pay/retirement income)
- Social needs: (social aspect, nondiscrimination)
- Esteem/Ego needs: Ensure that they are valued/respected
- Self Actualization:: they have purpose and value in their work
Negatives of the Theory:
- the level of needs are difficult to measure and different for every person
- Not all jobs fit this model.
- There’s no proof that self-actualization improves anything in the workplace
Theory of X and Y
Made by Douglas McGregor’s.
Theory X is for Managers and focus on a more Autocratic ruling
Theory Y is a Democratic rule (it allows for more growth and evolution)
