What are two examples of internal social control
Freud- superego= moral part of personality that challenges our Id’s selfish urges
Tradition/culture- e.g. Muslims fast during Ramadan
External forms of social control- what are agencies of social control- give 3 examples
Organisations that try to make us behave in certain ways through operant conditioning
Parents- ground children to punish
Friends- give verbal praise
Teachers- give out detentions
What is coercion- give an example
Making someone do/ stop doing something with threat/ force
E.g. threat of prison deters people from offending
What is the key question for control theorists
Why do people obey the law?
What are the 4 elements of an individual’s bond to society
Attachment- the more attached you are to society, the more likely you are to care about their opinion of you- less likely to breach norms
Commitment- more committed to living normal life
Involvement- more involved you are with regular activities= less time to offend
Beliefs- if we believe the law is right we are less likely to offend
Parenting - what’s 3 things parents should do (Riley and Shaw)
Involve themselves and spend time with their teenager
Take interest in school/ social life
Show strong disapproval of crime
