Discriminatory practices
-involves treating someone unfairly or less favourably compared to others
-discriminatory practices can take many forms such as excluding someone from activities or verbal or physical abuse

Discriminatory practice develops from uninformed attitudes and beliefs that result in unfair treatment of certain individuals or groups of people

Race
-Race refers to a group that is considered to have distinct characteristics based on their skin colour,nationality or ethnic origin.
-The NHS,emergency services and local authorities ask people to classify their race white,asian,black,mixed race,chinese/any other ethnic group.
- Data and statistics gathered using the classification system can be used to monitor, for example, use of services by different ethnic groups or the effectiveness of equal opportunities policies.
- Discrimination of the basis of race is called racism
Culture
-Culture refers to a group of people in society who share the same customs,language,dress,beliefs and values.
-Cultural groups perceived by some people as being different such as traveller communities are often victims of discrimination
Disability
-A disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on a person’s ability to do normal daily activities.
-discrimination on the basis of a disability is called disablism
Social class
Social class is usually defined by economic or educational status where people are grouped into hierarchical social categories people sometimes have unfavourable views of others and make judgements because of their social class
Age
-People are sometimes discriminated against because of their age and despite being an ageing society there are still negative perceptions about older people being frail or confused
-discrimination based on age is called aegim
Gender
This refers to whether someone is male ,female or transgender. Discrimination that occurs because of someone’s gender is called sexism
Sexual orientation
Discrimination due to someone’s sexuality if they are bisexual gay or lesbian is known as homophobia
Religion
-Religion is a system of beliefs and values.
-religious beliefs can be very important to people and influence the way they live their life. -Religious discrimination could involve a person’s religious needs not being met, for example kosher food not being available for a jewish patient at a hospital.

Direct discrimination involves intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences.
example of direct discrimation
a woman who is told that she did not get a job because she is a female is a victim of direct discrimination
Indirect discrimination
Indirect discrimination is when a policy ,practice or a rule applies to everybody but it has a detrimental effect on some people. The discrimination is accidental or unintentional
an example of indirect discrimation
if a job advertisement stated that male applicants must be clean shaven this would discriminate against men whose religious beliefs prevent them shaving their beards
