2.1 Flashcards
What is a solution?
A clear mixture of a substance and a liquid.
What is a suspension?
A turbid mixture of a solid in a liquid.
What is an emulsion?
A turbid mixture of two liquids.
What is an emulsifier?
A substance that helps an emulsion mix together.
What is a double layer system?
A mixture of two liquids where one is on top of the other due to the difference in density.
What is smoke a mixture of?
A solid and a gas.
What is foam a mixture of?
A gas and a liquid.
What is mist a mixture of?
A liquid and a gas.
Why will a mixture of gasses always be transparent?
Because gasses will always mix into one gas phase.
What is sedimentation?
A separation process where you leave a turbid mixture out, and that after a while the substance with the highest density sank to the bottom.
What is centrifugation?
A separation process where you put the mixture u want to separate in a centrifuge tube which will spin the tube with the opening to the center and then the lighter substance will eventually float on top.
What is Filtration?
A separation process where you put the mixture you want to separate through a filter, this is based on difference in particle size.
What is residue?
The solid substance that stays behind in the filter.
What is filtrate?
The substance passing through the filter.
