Containment policy
A policy adopted by the USA to prevent communism spreading to other nations. It’s defensive strategies aimed to secure US military and economic power.
Diplomacy
The ability to negotiate and discuss international relations with tact and sensitivity
Expansionism
A policy or practice that aims to increase the size of a country by expanding its territory
Sphere of influence
When one nation exercises political and economic control over the size of a country by expanding its territory.
Satellite state
A previously independent country under occupation or heavy political, economic and military control by another country
Yalta conference
Was established to discuss the future of Europe after World War II. Meeting of the ‘Big Three’.
Stunde Null
Zero hour, Germans fleeing soviet occupation. Those who didn’t flee where expelled or sent to labour camps
Potsdam conference
Meant to finalise yalta conference. However atmosphere changed due to new leadership. Roosevelt replaced by Truman. Churchill replaced by Atlee

US response to George Kennans ‘Long Telegram’. Designed to combat the spread of communism in Europe
Marshall Plan
The European recovery program to allow all European countries (excluding beyond iron curtain) to stabilise economy
