2.07 Flashcards
Endocrine Glands
The system of glands that influences human thoughts, behaviors and actions through the release of hormones.
Glands that release hormones.
Hormones
Chemical substances released into the bloodstream by endocrine glands such as the thyroid and pancreas; they travel through the bloodstream until they reach specific tissues, where they bind onto receptor sites, similar to neurotransmitters.
Messenger substances that travel from glands throughout body to control body processes.
Pituitary gland
Gland located at the base of the hypothalamus; controls the release of hormones from all other glands.
Tip of pinkie finger - hormone control
Oxytocin
Hormone released by the posterior pituitary gland that is involved in reproductive and parental behaviors.
Hormone for reproductive and parent actions.
Pineal gland
Endocrine gland located near the base of the cerebrum; secretes melatonin.
Gland that secretes melatonin.
Thyroid gland
Endocrine gland found in the neck; regulates metabolism
Gland that regulates metabolism.
Pancreas
Endocrine gland; controls the level of sugar in the blood.
Gland that regulates blood sugar.
Gonads
Sex glands; secrete hormones that regulate sexual development and behavior as well as reproduction.
Glands that regulate sex and reproduction.
Ovaries
Female reproductive organs in which ova or eggs are produced, present in humans and other vertebrates as a pair.
Female reproductive organs.
Testes
An organ that produces spermatozoa (male reproductive cells).
Male reproductive organs
Adrenal glands
Endocrine glands located on top of each kidney that secrete over 30 different hormones to deal with stress, regulate salt intake, and provide a secondary source of sex hormones affecting the sexual changes that occur during adolescence.
On top of kidneys, to regulate salt intake and stress response.
