How is background radiation caused?

A

Mainly by radon gas in the ground from rocks. It emits alpha, so hazard when inhaled. Can seep into buildings.

What happened in Chernobyl 1986?

A

Nuclear reactor exploded. Cloud of radioactive material from fire drifted over Europe. 100,000 people evacuated from Chernobyl and over 30 died. Many people still developing cancer or leukaemia.
