20.3 Nuclear Issues Flashcards
Why is radiation hazardous?
It ionises substances it passes through
What is background radiation?
Radioactive substances all around us. For example: Cosmic rays Food and drink Medical Air travel Ground Buildings Natural Nuclear weaponry tests Nuclear power
What do people working with X-rays wear?
Personal radiation monitors
How is background radiation caused?
Mainly by radon gas in the ground from rocks. It emits alpha, so hazard when inhaled. Can seep into buildings.
What happened in Chernobyl 1986?
Nuclear reactor exploded. Cloud of radioactive material from fire drifted over Europe. 100,000 people evacuated from Chernobyl and over 30 died. Many people still developing cancer or leukaemia.
Could Chernobyl happen again?
Most reactors different design
No high speed shut down system
