Q

Describe how sodium hydroxide ( amongst the other main productsis produced from the electrolysis of aqueous sodium chloride

A

Sodium ions and hydroxide ions are left in the solution. This is because hydrogen ions were reduced at the cathode and chloride ions oxidised at the anode

Q

Explain how the pH of a solution depends on the concentration and strength

A

PH depends on how long many H+ ions there are in a solution. High concentration of H+ ions = lower pH
Therefore, if an acid fully ionises in water to release H+ ions it will have a lower pH
If an acid is more concentrated, it will have more acid (/ solutes in a given volume. High concentration = lower pH

Q

Why can a neutral pH substance not conduct electricity ( eg titration with Sulfuric acid and barium hydroxide)

A

There are no ions that are free to move as barium sulfate is solid and hydrogen ions reacted with hydroxide ions to produce water
