Q

why is the emergence of new nation states often accompanied by conflict

A

borders drawn by colonial powers are drawn to suit/ prioritise European interests. This meant that people from different ethnic groups were placed in new nation states, leading to clashes over who controlled the state and which group was favoured.

religious and ethnic divides have resulted in conflict- e.g. in south sudan, conflict occured against the republic of Sudan (christian vs muslim), but also between groups in the south (christian vs christian), resulting in thousands of deaths- this was facillitated by the British gov through colonial rule. Resulted in muslim pop gaining poor levels of education.
