2018 Year 9 Chapter 2 Materials Flashcards
What is the makeup of an atom?
Protons and neutrons sit in a cluster in the middle of the atom that makes up the nucleus. Electrons are much smaller and faster and form an electron cloud outside of the nucleus.
What is a compound?
A substance made up of different types of atoms
What is a negatively charged atom called? Give an example
When an atom gains an electron, it becomes negatively charged and is called an anion. For example, if chlorine gains an electron, it goes from Cl to Cl-
What is a positively charged atom called. Give an example.
If an atom loses an electron, it becomes positively charged and is called a cation. For example, if sodium loses an electron, it becomes a cation and goes from Na to Na+
What is the mass of an electron compared to the mass of a proton?
Electrons are approximately 1800 times lighter than protons
What is half-life?
The time it takes for half the nuclei of an atom to decay
What is nuclear radiation used for in medicine?
Radiotherapy
What is ph?
The concentration of hydrogen ions (h+) in a solution
