2016 Pierce Engine Exhaust After Treatment Systems Flashcards
________ will trap particulate matter or soot and ash while the engine is running.
Diesel particulate filter
Passive Regeneration
Can occur during normal engine operation, typically at higher speeds and/or high loads. Exhaust temp gets high enough to burn off soot without driver intervention.
Active Regeneration
Removes collected soot in the diesel particulate filter (dpf) by injecting small amount of diesel fuel into exhaust stream to raise exhaust temp.
Driver can initiate by changing the duty cycle or manually initiate by using the regen switch while parked.
Auto active regeneration during driving
Automatically activate if:
- Dpf light illuminates and looks for opportunities
- Sufficient exhaust flow and temp conditions
- speedometer showing 5mph or higher
Parked regen RPM
900
Steps to perform a parked regen?
- Dpf lamp must be on or flashing.
- Stop in safe location.
- Set parking brake.
- Set safe zone around exhaust. (5ft of any items)
- Foot off throttle and brake.
- Hold regen switch for 5 seconds.
- Stay with rig. Monitor the area.
Regeneration can take up to how long depending on soot level?
20-40 mins
Exhaust temps stay high for how long after regen completion?
At least 3-5 minutes
After regen completion, the HEST light will remain on until exhaust outlet temp is below ___ or the vehicle speed exceeds ___?
977 degrees F
5 mph
