2- Work, Energy And Momemtum Flashcards
What does a moving object and friction create?
The kinetic energy is transferred to create heat
What does work done mean?
Energy transferred
How do we know an objects gravitational potential energy compared to another objects?
It’s position in the earths gravitational field (if it’s higher in the atmosphere it’s gravitational potential energy would be higher)
How do work done and gravitational potential energy interlink?
Whenever an object is moved vertically upwards, it’s gravitational potential energy increases equal to the work done/needed to do so
What happens when a rocket hits the atmosphere from being in space?
The friction in the atmosphere and the kinetic energy cause heat (why the front starts to catch fire)
What is elastic potential energy?
When work is done on an elastic object, the energy transferred to it is stored as elastic potential energy
Where does weight always act towards?
The centre of the earth
What does the weight of an object depend on?
The mass and gravitational field strength (downwards force) -10N/kg
What is weight measured in?
Newtons
How do you decrease the impact for the human in a car collision
Increase the impact time:
Seat belt
Air bag
Crumple zone at front of car
What momentum should an explosion have, why?
Zero, the objects move apart with equal and opposite momentum
Eg. Firing a gun, the bullet and recoil have the same momentum
What happens (scientifically) when the car is braking?
The kinetic energy is transferred to heat energy because of the added friction of the car against the road
The greater the blank and the greater the blank the greater the momentum. What are the blanks
Mass
Velocity
What is the law of conversion of momentum?
When objects interact, the total change in momentum is zero
What is impact time?
Time taken for a collision to take place
