Process for Seeking absolute truth
- want to know the truth, 2. Gather evidence from valid sources, 3. organize and evaluate evidence with logic.
evidence
experience
a major source of evidence that comes from an individuals sense experience of the world. This evidence is primarily subjective
Empirical
a major source of evidence that comes from a process of external measurement and experiment
Reason
A major source of evidence that comes from critical thinking. It also serves to organize other sources of evidence.
Strengths and weaknesses of the three categories of evidence:
Experience: Strength: senses are reliable. Weakness: Senses only see a part of reality.
Empirical: Repetitive way to discover truths about the natural world. Weakness: Some truths aren’t open to experiments and require interpretation.
Reason: Strengths: It helps us make sense of evidence and is accessible for everyone. Weaknesses: Humans are imperfect and it can produce confusion
Logic
The rules that reason should follow
Law of Non-Contradiction
rule of logic that a statement cannot both be true and untrue
Argument
a set of premises leading up to a logically inferred conclusion
3 Parts of An Arguement
premise, inference, conclusion
