2 - The Physiological Effects of the FF Ensemble Flashcards
What physiological factors interact and affect performance?
heat stress, metabolic stress, respiratory stress, cardiovascular stress, muscular stress, load carriage
What is the purpose of FPE?
designed to protect the worker from intense heat, flame, and exposure to chemicals
What is the normal range of core temperature?
36-38 degrees
Does heat storage affect VO2?
no, but it does affect ventilation
What 3 factors contribute to UHS?
metabolic rate, encapsulation, environmental exposure
What contributes to thermal stress in firefighting?
heat from the environment, heat from demanding physical exercise
What is uncompensable heat stress?
occurs when the evaporative heat loss required to maintain a thermal steady state exceeds the maximal evaporative capacity of the environment
When is heat stress uncompensable?
when the heat strain index is >1
When do the respiratory muscles have to work harder to ventilate the same volume with SCBA?
at about 80-100 L/min - respiratory muscles must generate about 1.5x the pressure to ventilate the same volume
