2. Screening Soil Bacteria for AR Flashcards
What is an antiseptic?
A substance used on living tissue to slow/inhibit the growth of infectious microorganisms.
What is a disinfectant?
A chemical agent used to destroy bacteria + sanitize implements.
What makes up an antibiotic family? Name some examples.
Consists of diff. classes of antibiotics used for restricting bacterial growth + production/ causing bacterial death.
(eg. Tetracyclines, sulfonamides, glycopeptides)
What is the Kirby-Bauer method? How does it work?
Uses antibiotic-containing disks to test whether particular bacteria are susceptible to specific antibiotics
If an organism is susceptible to an antibiotic, a zone of inhibition will surround the disc. It can then be used in a diff culture if the antibiotic is static/cidal to the organism.
Who is Ehrlich?
Proposed treating an infection by eliminating the causative agent using a synthetic drug
Who is Semmelweis?
Obstetric physician who introduced hand disinfection w/ chlorinated lime b/w patient exams
Who is Lister?
Introduced carbolic acid as a wound dressing disinfecting hand wash prior to surgery
What is a non-selective medium?
Growth medium that contains no inhibitory factors + allows growth of many different species
What is trypticase soy broth?
Rich, non-selective bacterial growth medium
What is a lawn?
Area of confluent bacterial growth
What is meant by microbiostatic?
Temporarily prevents the growth of microorganisms
What is the meaning of microbiocidal?
Kills organisms
What is a chromosome?
DNA molecule holding the genetic material of a cell
