2: Reflection Flashcards
Specular vs diffused reflection
Specular: light wavelength larger than surface irregularities, beam reflected from shiny surface parallel (lake, mirror)
Diffuse: light wavelength smaller than surface irregularities, rays reflected in different directions (asphalt, wood, paper)
Describe the 3 interactions between light and matter
Ray of light strikes object, can be ..
Reflected by reflector
Transmitted through transparent material
Absorbed by objects not allowing light to go through
2 types of images
Real (can be focused on screen; movie)
Virtual (cannot be focused; mirror)
Characteristics of images from camera obscura (pinhole)
Type: real
Orientation: inverted
Size: smaller than object
Characteristics of images from plane mirrors
Type: virtual
Orientation: vertical, upright
Size, distance: same object
Position: horizontally inverted
Images formed by convex mirrors
Virtual
Upright
Smaller than object
Distance from mirror smaller than object
