What is the ‘bible belt’?
Name given to the south east states of the USA who viewed themselves as righteous, God-fearing, Christians

Protestants who believed everything in the bible was to be taken literally and shouldn’t be questioned

widely accepted in towns/cities. Not accepted in rural areas, especially in bible belt
Butler Act
passed in 1924, made it illegal for public schools to teach any theory that went against the bible in Tennessee. five other states passed similar laws
John scopes
Biology teacher who taught evolution to his school to be purposefully arrested and put on trial.
when was the monkey trial
July 1925. Scoped supported by American Civil Liberties Union and defended by Clarence Darrow, prosecutor was William Jennings Bryan (fundamentalist)
What did the monkey trial result in
Scopes was fined $100. Trial ruined reputation of fundamentalists as it became a debate between religion and science. media mocked the beliefs of those who opposed evolution.
Indian citizenship Act
1924, granted full citizenship to Native Americans (they were known as Indians in act)
