2. Qualitative Equilibrium Flashcards
What does a catalyst do?
Lower the activation energy of a reaction through providing a new reaction pathway.
What is an open system?
A system in which matter and energy can enter and leave.
What is a closed system?
A system in which matter cannot enter and leave but energy can enter and leave.
What is an isolated system?
A system in which neither matter nor energy can enter nor leave.
What is static equilibrium?
Equilibrium achieved when a reaction is no longer occurring.
What is dynamic equilibrium?
Equilibrium achieved when there is a forward and reverse reaction are occurring at the same rate.
What conditions must be met to achieve dynamic equilibrium?
The system must be closed, there must be high enough energy for the reaction to occur.
What is collision theory?
For a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient activation energy to break bonds and have correct orientation to allow new bonds to form.
What sign is the ∆H of an exothermic reaction?
Negative
What sign is the ∆H of an endothermic reaction?
Positive
