2. Neuroanatomy II Flashcards
Describe the functions of the Brain Stem.
-Serves as a conduit for ascending and descending tracts connecting the spinal cord to higher centres.
-Contains important reflex centres associated with the control of respiration, heart rate and blood pressure.
-contains cranial nerve nuclei.
Describe the functions of the cerebellum.
-Integrates ascending information, and feeds back to the cerebral cortex to refine movement.
-Modifies movement, and integrates motor learning.
-Maintenance of upright posture and balance.
-Aids the cerebral cortex in planning sequential movements to make smooth progressions from one movement to the next.
-Maintenance of the tension of muscles
Name the 3 sections of the brain stem.
-Midbrain
-Pons.
-Medulla
Describe the spinal cord.
-A two-way impulse conduction pathway and reflex centre
-31 spinal nerves in total. Give rise to the peripheral nerves of the body.
Describe Grey matter.
where the cell bodies of neurons in the brain reside giving it a pinkish grey colour.
Describe White matter.
Where myelinated axons reside which connect different parts of the grey matter.
Name the 3 main protections of the CNS.
-Bone
-Meninges.
-Cerebral spinal fluid.
Name the three divisions of the Meninges.
-Dura
-Arachnoid
-Pia
Describe the Dura.
Superficial and strongest layer usually in contact with bone.
Describe the Aracnoid.
Middle layer, adhered closely to the dura and is web-like in appearance has spaces call subarachnoid space.
Describe the Pia.
Deepest layer is in direct contact with CNS tissue.
Describe CSF
