2-Media - The media, globalisation and pop culture Flashcards
What is the impact of globalisation on the media?
The world is interconnected meaning that the media has become global and people now consume similar cultural products – music / TV / films / books. Many argue this has led to a homogenisation of culture.
What is popular culture and why does it matter?
short lived, less intelligent, trivial, commercialised – pop music,
Facebook, ‘trash’ TV. People can choose / pick ‘n’ mix from all cultures. Elements of pop in high culture and vice versa. High culture products – Mona Lisa’ are popularised – have become part of pop culture.
What is the Marxist view of global media and popular culture ?
Sklair- American/Western media spread, info, ideas, entertainment and popular culture to the globe. Which means American ideas, values and products are spread across the world.
Evidence that supports the Marxist view on global media and pop culture:
American TV shows such as Friends are global and they live in a capitalist society which could suggest that capitalism is normal.
Evaluation of the Marxist view on the global media and pop culture:
Global media allows people to choose many things they watch not just American shows but also shows from other countries around the world. Pluralist- People choose to adopt the cultures or not.
What does Marcus and Adorno believe?
The aim of the global mass media is to indoctrinate people and make the world a homogenous culture.
What is the cultural and the media imperialism ?
All this American and western culture is ruining cultures in other countries, exploits people, creates greedy people and encourages extremism).
What is the impact of cultural imperialism on individuals and society?
Domination of American TNCs
Traditional cultures being destroyed
American culture being ‘forced’ upon
them – lack of choice
Profit is no.1
Reinforces capitalism
What does Marcuse argue?
He argues that media companies encourage uncritical thinking and conformity. This is achieved in 3 ways.
- Commodity fetishism: this is where people become obsessed with products and over rely on them.
- False needs: Instilling the belief that people need products in order to conform to a centre lifestyle.
- Conspicuous consumption: the belief that some products and brands have more meaning than others, People want recognition from others.
Give an effect and analysis of culture imperialism.
With a suitable evaluation.
Marginalisation - big American brands seen as more desirable. They replace the rich diverse cultures with bland, sterile, dumbed down and homogenous American culture.
Evaluation: Crothers, will result in a soulness culture where people will be looking to buy the next consumable good that they have been convinced they need.
Post-modernist view on the impact of globalisation on mass media ?
-We live in a media saturated society meaning that the media and tech influence and shape identities more so now than families and CAGE.
-Globalisation increases choice and opportunities that are now available to people. People can choose their lifestyles.
What is the difference between modernism and post-modernism ?
Modernists argue that through
Science, reasoning and logic we could understand the fundamental truth of
being within society. However, Post-modernists argue that there is no single fundamental truth to society, “truth” is relative to the individual.
What is meta-narrative ?
Broad and accepted idea in
society.
Evaluations of the post-modernist view of globalisation on the mass media:
-Underestimates the importance of CAGE.
-Choice is not available to everyone – Digital divide still means many
cannot access mass media.
