2) Mechanical Behaviour of a Lamina Flashcards
1
Q
What happens to most materials when you increase temperature?
A
They expand.
2
Q
What happens to the stresses when a homogenous material expands?
A
No stresses are apparent (free expansion).
3
Q
What happens to the epoxy and fibres when a lamina is increased by temperature? What implication does this have on the stresses?
A
Epoxy tries to expand due to to a high coefficient of thermal expansion but the fibres restrict the expansion as they have a lower C.T.E and therefore epoxy is in compression (shrink) and fibres are in tension. So there are internal stress apparent but the average stress is zero due to no applied load.
