1) You have been asked to draw up and give an IM injection of 7.5mg of Medication A (as prescribed by Dr. White) to Mrs MacDonald. Medication A comes as a 50mg powder in a glass vial. You are required to inject 20ml of sterile water into the container and mix it with the powder to reconstitute the solution. Please draw up and give this patient the correct dosage of medication.

50mg mixed in 20ml of water gives a strength of 50mg/20ml. 50/20= 2.5mg per ml.
The patient needs 7.5mg. 7.5 (dose required)/2.5 (dose in 1 ml)= 3 (number of mls needed for required dose). So 3ml of the reconstituted solution is required.

Question 3

OUTSIDE CALCULATIONS:
2) You have been asked to administer a subcutaneous dose of Medication B to Mr Santos who weighs 80kg. Medication B comes in a pre-made vial of strength 300mg/5ml. Please draw up and administer a dose equivalent to 1.5mg/kg for this patient (as prescribed by Dr Green).

80 x 1.5= 120 so 120 mg are required for this patient.
300/5= 60 so there are 60mg/ml.
120/60= 2. So 2ml should be drawn up to give the correct dose.
