2 - GI tract and absorption Flashcards
What cells line the stomach and why are they important?
The inner lining of the stomach is covered with epithelium cells that produce both mucus and an alkaline, bicarbonate-containing fluid, which protects them from attack by stomachs own acidic digestive juices
The gastric pits are lined with what cells?
More epithelial cells
Mucus secreting cells
Specialised cells that secrete different substances such as
Parietal or oxyntic cells - secrete HCL and intrinsic factor
Chief cells - secrete pepsinogen, chymosin, gastric lipase
Enterchromaffin-like cells: histamine
Enteroendocrine cells: Gastrin and somatostatin
Why might proton pump inhibitors be the preferred treatment over other methods?
Inhibition of proton pump will reduce acid secretion independently of how secretion is stimulated
Inhibition of acid secretion by H2 receptor antagonists can be overcome by food-induced stimulation of acid secretion.
What is the function of somatostatin?
Somatostatin is released when stomach acidity becomes too high
What promotes HCl secretion?
Histamine
Acetylcholine
Gastric G cells
