2. endocrine system Flashcards
what are the functions of the endocrine system
glands release hormones directly into the bloodstream that act as powerful messengers that control and coordinate activities throughout the body.
works in parallel with the nervous system but it is slower and more effective.
how does the endocrine system control behaviour
hormones allow us to grow and go through puberty and therefore reproduce.
however, this system regulates other parts of our lives - rhythm of heart and how much we sleep.
hormones increase or decrease specific processes within the cell to change the way the cell behaves.
what is the function of the pineal gland
releases melatonin.
responsible for biological rhythms - sleep/wake cycle.
what is the function of the hypothalamus
stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.
what is the function of the thyroid gland
releases thyroxine.
responsible for regulating metabolism.
what is the function of the pituitary gland
‘master gland’ because the hormones released by this gland control and release the hormones from other glands.
what is the function of the adrenal gland (cortex)
releases cortisol.
stimulates the release of glucose to provide the body with energy while supressing the immune system.
what is the function of the adrenal gland (medulla)
releases adrenaline and noradrenaline.
key hormone in the fight or flight response.
what is the function of the ovaries
releases oestrogen.
controls regulation of female reproductive system - menstrual cycle and pregnancy.
what is the function of the testes
releases testosterone.
responsible for development of male sex characteristics during puberty while also promoting muscle growth.
