Used by Ashkenazic Jews for reading Torah on Yamim noraim possibly because the Zohar states that when reading about the death of Ahron’s sons on Yom Kippur, it is appropriate to shed tears - thus a tune that may show sadness, supported by the fact that in Frankfurt, only the first Torah reading (the one which mentions the death of Ahron’s sons) is read in this special way.
