2. Balanced Equations Flashcards
What occurs when a acid reacts with a base?
The product of the reaction will create salt and water.
When is a chemical equation balanced?
When the number of each type of atom on the left side of the equation is equal to the number of each type of atom on the right hand side of the equation.
What does combustion produce?
Water and carbon dioxide.
What does the arrow read as in a chemical reaction?
It reads as “produces”.
What does the ‘+’ sign read as in a chemical reaction?
It reads as “reacts with”.
What is a phase indicator?
It indicated the state that the chemical is in. e.g gas (g), liquid (l), solid (s) or is it in an aqueous solution (aq)
What are products?
Chemicals to the right of the reaction.
What is changed in order to balance a chemical reaction?
A number may be added in the front of elements or compunds. Note: the smaller numbers must not be chaged. Only the coefficient, the big number, can change.
Explain what is meant by the ‘conservation of mass’ in terms of a chemical reaction.
Mass and or atoms are neither created nor destoryed in any reaction. Thus the atoms on elements on the left of an equation must equal those on the right.
What are reactants?
Chemicals to the left of the arrow.
