2: atomic theory Flashcards
what did physicists see in 19th cen.?
H2 in tube excited w/ electrical discharge
disassociates into excited H atoms tht emitts light @ certain wavelength
Balmer series: n=2, visible lights
Lyman series: n=1, ultraviolets
Paschen series: infrared
all govenerd by Rydberg formula, predict wavelength
why doesnt the bohr model work? (4 reasons)
it works for h bt doesnt explain:
- why e- in ground state (n=1) doesnt fall into the nucleus
- why only certain orbits are allowed (why not 1.5?)
- doesnt explain the splitting of H emission spectrum into 2 lines
- doesnt work for aatoms w/ more than 1 e-
explain: v = c / λ
λ is wavelength = distance btw identical poinst on successive waves
c is speed of light
v = amount of oscilation cycles that occur btw fixed points per unit times
amplitude = height of wave
transmission of energy in the form of waves and particle
light
light can be absorbed or emitted as photons = tiny pockets of energy
when a photon is absorbed by a system, its energy increases by E
T or F
T
light cannot be quantized- T OR F
F
