2. Anthropometry & Body Composition Flashcards

1
Q

Describe the standardized procedure for measuring the ** skinfold.
Describe the subject position, instrument used, and step-by-step procedure. The asterisks represent any of the skinfold measurements you were asked to carry out in the lab procedures.

A

Suprailiac skinfold measurement: A skinfold caliper is to be used in this measurement. The fold is raised superiorto the iliac crest on the mid-axillary line on the right side of the body. The fold runs downwards, with the caliperbeing applied one centimeter from the left thumb and forefinger.

Triceps skinfold measurement: The subject stands with the arm by the side and the elbow extended but relaxed. The measurement is taken on the RIGHT side at the mid acromiale-radiale level on the midline of the posteriorsurface of the arm. The skinfold runs parallel to the long axis of the arm.

Waist girth measurement: A measuring tape is used to measure waist girth. The subject’s abdomen is supposedto be clear of any clothing or accessories. The feet are supposed to be shoulder width apart and the armscrossed in a relaxed manner. The tape is to be placed at the top of the iliac crests, and this is also where themeasurement is taken

.Femur bone width: A bone caliper is used to measure the width of the femur. The subject sits on a chair withtheir foot on the floor and their knee flexed at a right angle. Locate the medial and lateral condyles of the femur.Mark the medial and lateral condyle landmarks with pen, and then measure with the bone caliper

Q

In the O-Scale System of body composition assessment, how is the Adiposity rating used to help interpret the Proportional Weight rating?

A

those with low adiposity ratings, yet high proportional weight ratings are shown to b overweight rather than over-fat, this becomes helpful with very athletic people such as bodybuilders

Q

What advantages do the O-Scale System and the CSEP Physical Activity, Fitness and
Lifestyle Assessment – Body Composition procedure have in comparison to
percentage body fat predictions from skinfold measurements, when used in
individual assessments?

A

the O-scale and Canadian physical activity, fitness and lifestyle appraisal are better at targeting where the additional fat is, rather than just if the subject is overweight or not

Q

In the CSEP Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Assessment – Body Composition
procedure, why are different norm tables used for clients under 20 years of age
versus clients over 20 years of age?

A

for people aged under 20 years, the tables and charts are used to assess risk of overweight, underweight and obese. BMI changes substantially as children grow and get older.
