2. Anatomy Of Long Bone Flashcards
What is the Diaphysis
•Shaft of the long bone
•has a large medullary cavity, whose:
-walls are composed of compact bone
-cavity contains yellow marrow which stores fat
What is the epiphysis
o Ends of the bone
o Composed mostly of spongy bone that contains red bone marrow, where blood cells are made
What is the Periosteum
• Outside covering of the
diaphysis
• It is a layer of fibrous
connective tissue
What is the Sharpey’s fibers
• Secures periosteum to underlying bone
What is the Arteries
• Supply bone cells with nutrients
What is the Articular cartilage
- Covers the external surface of the epiphyses
- Made of hyaline cartilage
- Decreases friction at joint surfaces
What is the Epiphyseal plate
• Flat plate of hyaline cartilage seen in young, growing bone.
What is the Epiphyseal line
- Remains of the epiphyseal plate
* Seen in adult bones
